Lessons For Youth Designed as Aids to the Proper Understanding of the Scriptures Rev J W B Allen 9781247636221 Books
Reproduction of a book originally published by Southern Methodist Publishing House, Nashville. A copy of the original 1883 edition is housed at the Center for American History in Austin, and this reproduction by Nabu was apparently made from a copy at the Library of Congress.Publishing errors notwithstanding, this appears to be a faithful reproduction of the original. Shame on you, Nabu, for dropping the "S" in the title on the cover, placing even-numbered pages on the right-hand side of the open book, and shuffling around the title page with other frontmatter pages. A minor but amusing blemish: the book was written at Thrifty, Texas - separated by an ocean and several plant life zones from the castle ruins pictured on the cover of this reproduction.
The full title of this book is Lessons (with an "s") for Youth; Designed as Aids to The Proper Understanding of the Scriptures. Thank you, Amazon, for correcting this information in your online listing!
Lessons for Youth was written by John William Barkley Allen, a Methodist preacher who moved from Georgia to Texas in 1852. He died in Fayette County in 1890 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Flatonia. He lived with other Allen family members for a few years in Thrifty, Brown County, until that town was bypassed by the railroad, then returned to Fayette County.
In 1955 the Brownwood Banner published "Charles Mullins and Reverend J.W.B. Allen, Texas Pioneers," which features a photo of J.W.B. Allen. My children descend from J.W.B. Allen's tenth child, who married a Burleson.
Not having studied the text in detail and not being a theologian, I am unqualified to comment on its contents, but the book's 53 lessons appear to be a charming and introspective presentation of the basic tenets of Christianity in the Methodist tradition for youths and young adults of the 1880's, as well as a glimpse or two into the family history of J.W.B. Allen. The use of Roman numerals for scripture references (e.g., Ex. xii, 47) will challenge your math skills! (My, how today's educational standards have drifted from the classical education embraced by our forebears. . . .)
Despite flaws in publication, for which I downgraded to four stars, this book is a welcome addition to the library of anyone weary of searching antique book dealers for a copy of the 1883 original. The Amazon price is below what it would cost to photocopy the book, and the paperback binding makes a neat and compact piece on your bookshelf.
